History of Camp Wings
Camp Wings is a camp dedicated to the pursuit of aviation education and awareness. Pilots, volunteers and crew invest countless hours each year to prepare for the two day camp at Back Achers Airfield in Candler, FL.
This camp was the brainchild of Chris Hoefly, an airline pilot and former Air Force pilot. With the help of the University of Central Florida Air Force ROTC and local aviation community Mr. Hoefly was able to organize and hold the first camp in the late summer of 2004. This camp hosted 17 middle and high school campers and nearly 50 volunteers, pilots and crew. Although the weather was quite hot, the campers could not wipe the smiles off of their faces at the end of the camp.
In November of 2005, Back Achers Airfield hosted the second Camp Wings. There were 22 campers in attendance to include campers from K-12th grade. The camp hosted more airplanes and pilots in 2005 because of the success in 2004. Also, new experiments in aerodynamics were setup for the campers as well as new demonstrations in skydiving and remote control flight to name a few.
Camp Wings 2006 was the culmination of 3 years of work and proves that our camp gets better every year. Twenty-Eight local K-12 students participated as well as an army of volunteers. There was a phenominal aerobatics demonstration to start the camp off with fly-bys of some exotic planes like the PBY, a WWII Navy floatplane, and an L39 jet.
As the camp grows there are plans to turn it into a three or four day camp in the future, so that campers can get more focus and enjoyment as opposed to only two days.
